Don’t you hate it when musicians start telling you what they think about stuff? Lecturing you on what you need to think about this or that? Hoisting themselves all over your airwaves to give you their opinion about the rights or wrongs of the world. Self-righteously lecturing the listener with their first world, unremarkable views which they hold for their own entitled amusement, while people with actual problems who are stuck in real life situations, struggle to eek out an existence, weighed down by other human beings’ relentless, unforgiving, inhumanity to everything that lives.
Well. I’m alright with it.
In the words of a well good writer,
“It doesn’t matter what they say. No one’s listening anyway”
This song is dedicated to my brother-in-law, Daniel and father-in-law, David. I wonder if they remember what it’s about.
Much as I love you both, I just wanted to rub it in and say I think I was right about this one.
There you go. That’s what matters. Being right. Winning the battle for whatever before going on to surrender to the inevitable and ultimate relinquishment of all.
Twenty seven years is a long time to hold a grudge because of someone’s inability to believe that people can cast off the past, forgive each other and stop killing, because they hold a grudge against someone.
Well done to us for not taking up arms and exercising our right to something or other.
❤️10 April 1998 and 22 May 1998.
Selfish Gene
Let us hope that what you had to say
Will make the wave subside give me a chance to hide.
I fear the earth will run through our fingers
while the wind rushes through our hair.
You hurt me with your cruel words.
You were unkind to me when I needed you.
You’re a person who would ground the birds.
Because an exaltation would spoil the view.
Believing in the selfish gene is like,
Believing in the mother of the brother of a son
Who had a gun in the nape of the neck of your best friend
Just because he had a link to a man in the past who would blast
and blast away.
And if you just do what you’ve always done,
You’ll just get what you’ve always got.
